INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MEDIA AND SOCIETY
(iC-MAS2019)

Organized by
Strategic Communication Programme
Faculty of Language and Communication
Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS)

Theme
Digitalized Society:
Dynamics of Real-World and Cyber-World Realities

Advances in communication technology have facilitated social interaction across time and space. The myriad of interaction across and between geographical borders has continued to shape real-world and cyber-world realities. These realities collide, reform and transform everyday social life of people within and across geographical boundaries. These social realities are always changing and reflect the dynamics of a living society. Within each society there will always be different forces trying to project and protect their version of reality which will be different than the dominant reality projected by the ruling elites. Social media are now playing a crucial role in deconstructing the ruling paradigm that has been continuously promoted by the traditional media. Contestations to remain relevant and dominant between the new and traditional media continue. The competing discourses are vigorously taking place in cyber realities with compounding effect on the real world realities. These discourses are seldom monitored but their impact can be felt at social, cultural and political spheres.

These realities are further complicated as increasing globalization activities rupture and destabilize existing local societal values and norms. With the onslaught of globalization, societies have no other choice but to constantly look at their existing governing policies to ensure that it stays current with prevailing needs and challenges. While a nation constructed policies strive to promote social, economic and political development, the need for scholars to examine the role of traditional and new mass media in fostering and consolidating the nation-state remains. Thus society will continue to take stock of new realities and see whether they are in sync with existing socially constructed cultural and social identity.

To relook, debate, discuss and debunk prevailing realities within the media sphere, the Strategic Communication Programme, Faculty of Language and Communication, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) will be organizing an International Conference on Media and Society (or iC-MAS2019). The venue of the iC-MAS2019 will be in Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) Main Campus in Kota Samarahan, Sarawak.
